I have not been able to find a way to restore a military unit that has suffered casualties in battle but survived.

Does anyone know?

If your unit has survived a battle and has lost numbers, you can retrain the unit at your keep. Click on the keep, you will see your slection of units to recruit, but there is a retrain tab at the top right-hand corner. Click on that and you can select the units you wish to retrain, it will use some of your resources to do so.

thx Andrea, I think my issue then is that I don't have a keep yet and therefore don't have that tab.
